Madison Homelessness Initiative

On November 1, 2017, Project Bubbles, a program of the Madison Homelessness Initiative, ended as planned upon the opening of The Beacon, the permanent day shelter with laundry facilities. The Madison Homelessness Initiative now operates on a more limited budget to assist current and recently homeless individuals with personal needs expenses.

Project Bubbles is a free self-serve Tuesday and Friday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. laundry opportunity for people experiencing homelessness in Madison, Wis. It takes place at Self-Serve Laundry at 701 E. Johnson Street.

Established in July 2011 as a grassroots volunteer initiative, it was intended as a temporary remedy for system insufficiencies until a permanent solution could be identified and actualized. Meanwhile the true need has been revealed and the volume of participation is far greater than anyone had imagined. Now over 5,000 visits are made yearly to this program by over 700 unique individuals doing over 11,000 free loads of wash with free supplies, facilitated by welcoming volunteers.

The wait for that enduring solution has been much longer than anticipated but it is now thankfully within sight, with the promise of a new resource center with ample laundry and shower facilities opening sometime in 2017. Project Bubbles is determined to continue until then because wearing clean clothes is simply great!

Please stride with us on this restorative mission, bringing dignity, comfort and opportunity to many of our neighbors who otherwise would be without.
